THE MAURY FOUNDATION WINTER UPDATE

A MAURY HIGH SCHOOL SUPERBOWL

On Sunday, February 2nd, there will be a special "first" in the 100 plus years of our school's great history. Two Commodore graduates, Kam Chancellor (class of 2006) and Vinston Painter (class of 2008), will square off in Super Bowl XLVIII. Prior to reaching football's pinnacle game, these two athletes starred in Navy and Orange.

Before Kam began patrolling the secondary as the starting strong safety for the Seattle Seahawks, he was a multi-sport standout for the Commodores. While Kam was a key starter for the basketball team, he also led Maury as the team's starting quarterback. As a senior, Kam was named to the All-Eastern District first team, throwing for more than 2,000 yards and running for an additional 500. Kam steered the Commodores to the Group AAA Division 5 playoffs facing off against Phoebus in one of the most thrilling games in Eastern Region history. After graduating from Maury in 2006, Kam took his talents to Blacksburg, VA to play for Coach Frank Beamer. There, he played all four years and graduated in 2010; he was then selected in the 5th round of the 2010 NFL draft by the Seattle Seahawks. Kam is now considered one of the top safety's in the league and was named an All-Pro this season. In addition to enjoying success on the field, Kam is also giving back to the Hampton Roads community. He recently created the Kam Cares Foundation and hosts an annual Memorial Day cookout in Norfolk.

Vinston Painter will be back in Blue and Orange at the Super Bowl but this time for the Denver Broncos.  As a Commodore, Vinston was a two-way star for the football team. During his junior year in 2007, Vinston was named to the All-Eastern District first team on the offensive line and was named to the second team for his play on Maury's defensive line as well. His play on both sides of the ball was a major reason the Commodores were able to advance to the second round of the regional playoffs. The accolades kept coming in throughout his senior year as he was named to the All-State Group AAA first team on the offensive line. After graduating from Maury in 2008, Vinston joined Kam Chancellor and Coach Beemer at Virginia Tech. For his first three years at Tech, Vinston split time between the offensive and defensive lines; however, Vinston found his true home his senior year on the offensive line where he started all 13 games. He was an honorable mention All-ACC Coaches selection. Vinston graduated from Virginia Tech in 2013 and was selected in the 6th round by the Denver Broncos. During his rookie year, Vinston has worked his way up the Broncos depth chart and is now listed as the number two right tackle.  With his size and athletic ability, Vinston's future in the NFL is undeniably bright.

No matter the outcome on the frigid New Jersey field on Super Bowl Sunday, both men and our alumni have plenty to be proud of.

Fall BBQ Blast
A little morning rain didn't keep the crowd away from The Foundation's BBQ Blast.

The Foundation's annual BBQ brings together classmates and friends of the school for a great cause. Proceeds from the BBQ go towards college scholarships for deserving Maury seniors who are selected from each graduating class. This year's event included an afternoon of BBQ and all the fixings from Blackdog Catering, local beer from Smartmouth Brewing Company and live music from Reckless Passengers, fronted by Maury grad Luke Hartman. Friendly games of corn hole and socializing from many generations of graduates rounded out the afternoon.

Thank you to our 2013 sponsors, whose generous support makes the BBQ Blast possible.
