The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is recruiting for Sheriff's Custody Assistants, whose duties include a variety of support functions in a law enforcement  detention center, with duties that include working around and with inmates, visitors, and law enforcement officers.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
 
1) Background:  Prior to appointment, applicants will be fingerprinted and must pass an extensive background investigation, including a polygraph examination. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony.
2) Availability:APPLICANTS MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR ALL SHIFTS: Day, Swing, Night, Rotating, Weekends as well as mandatory overtime and holidays. Shift differentials and overtime compensation are available. Refusal of an assigned shift, shift reassignment, or location may result in removal from the eligible list or termination.
3) Uniform: Positions of Sheriff's Custody Assistant are required to purchase uniforms, and are provided an annual uniform allowance of $425.00 disbursed in July of each year following appointment. 
4) Facility: Sheriff's Custody Assistants usually perform duties in areas protected from inmates by glass or screens within locked security facilities. Employees may be required to remain at the detention facility for meals.

Minimum Requirements

Availability:  Applicants must be available for all shifts.

Education:  Possession of a High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.

           -- AND --

Experience:  Six (6) months of full-time work experience*.

*Possession of an Associate's Degree, or higher from an institution accredited by the U.S. Department of Education may substitute for the required experience.

Selection Process

Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take the online written assessment.  The assessment will consist of an evaluation of skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Public Contact and Interpersonal Skills

WORK CONDITIONS: I understand that Sheriff's Custody Assistants provide a range of clerical support within a Sheriff's Detention Facility, including the booking of prisoners, working with the public/visitors, and law enforcement officers. Employees may be required to remain at the detention facility for meals.

SHIFT: The County detention facilities operate on a 24 hour a day basis, seven days a week, including nights, weekends, holidays, and may be required to work overtime.
