Sometimes it seems like motherhood is a track-and-field event. We chase kids. We hurtle the conflicts life throws at us. We shot-put our bad attitudes out of our day (or at least try). And we run. We run to our kids’ school, run to the store, run to soccer practice, run to make dinner, and most days run out of time before we get everything done on our list.

The problem isn’t the running. After all, 2 Timothy 4:7 tells us to finish the race. The problem is that we’re often running in the wrong direction, or we feel like we’re running around in circles. I’ve been there, done that. And I’ve discovered that what helps me is to ask myself a few questions.

  1. In all that I’m doing, what matters most in eternity?
  2. What won’t matter in eternity?
  3. What can I cut?
  4. What things are hard that I enjoy?
  5. What things are easy that I don’t enjoy?
  6. What does this tell me about my talents and gifts?
  7. Five years from now, what are three goals I want to reach?
  8. What steps do I need to take to reach those goals?
  9. What do I feel God speaking to my heart?

Life will always be busy, and sometimes it’s not the race that’s the problem—it’s making sure you’re heading the right direction.
