Comprehensive college search website ranks UH in top 50

UH placed 45th out of 50 colleges ranked across the nation in terms of affordability and return on investment.

Affordable Schools, an online resource that helps students seek higher education while avoiding high tuition, published this list in its article “The 50 Most Affordable Colleges with Best Return.” Cited tuition costs and ROI data stemmed from the 2013-2014 year.

“We are pleased that national rankings consistently recognize the University of Houston among the most affordable universities offering a superior education,” said UH President and Chancellor Renu Khator. “Being cited as a university offering the ‘best return’ indicates we are succeeding in preparing our students to excel in a global economy, while providing a quality, cost-effective education.”

Affordable Schools considered both tuition costs for the 2013-2014 academic year along with the expected income of students graduating with bachelor’s degrees in order to calculate rankings. UH’s tuition came out to be $9,318 at the time and was balanced with average graduates’ salaries, which came out at $49,500.

UH Executive Director of Media Relations Richard Bonnin has a vast knowledge of these types of ranking lists and how they work.

“Third-party endorsements are always the best kind to receive, particularly when the recognition comes at a national level,” Bonnin said.“President Khator and the administration have implemented strategic initiatives that have placed the University on a path of affordable excellence.”

This year, UH will try to provide students a more affordable college experience. The University has designed a program called “UH in 4”, which offers incoming freshmen an optional four-year fixed rate plan and requires them to complete 30 semester credit hours each academic year.

“We will always strive to make improvements and innovative programs such as our new UH in 4 initiative … demonstrate this commitment,” Khator said.

Incoming  Lone Star College transfer and biology major Bakari Samin chose UH over Texas Christian University and other Texas schools because of UH’s affordability.

“I chose UH, because it is one of the most affordable of Texas schools, and the fact that it is a Tier One is a plus,” Samin said.
