Fujifilm X-T3 Eye and Face Detection Tracking Test Videos

Fujifilm X-T3

Hüseyin Taskin as well as ePhotozine have uploaded a some videos, demonstrating the eye/face detection autofocus tracking as well an f-log test of the brand new Fujifilm X-T3.

However, I start this article with a short but inspiring video Hüseyin made, because at the end of the day, what you create with your camera is what matters most.

And now, down below some good news for Fujifilm X-T3 shooters, regarding face/eye detection. You can click the link below or check out the embedded video below.

There is a huge improvement over all previous X series cameras, and give Fujifilm’s firmware approach, it can only just get even better.

Fujifilm X-H1 Mini-Roundup

Also feedback from our X-H1 facebook group by Mario V. here.

First Shots & First Impressions with the X-H1…
DON’T BUY ONE…. BUY TWO!!!

1. Ergonomics… Amazing. Yes, Better with the grip with the 16-55 but still very nice without the grip.
2. Shutter Sound… What??? For a mechanical shutter that is so damn Sexy and quiet!!
3. Focus. Yes, it’s better, faster and the face and eye focus is f’ing awesome!
4. I have a Sony a7R iii and NO, I would not buy an a7 iii after having tried this. I will be ordering a second X-H1.
5. Size… Not even an issue. The ergonomics make up for the minimal size difference compared the the X-T2.
6. Low Light Focusing… Yes, snappy and fast!
7. I shot these with the 56 f1.2 which I normally don’t tend to use because I can’t hold steady for crap! With the IBIS the results were soooo much better.

Tomorrow I’ll be taking it into the studio to try it there. I can’t quite put my hands on it but this camera just functions fast. Reacts fast and the focus isn’t jumpy as I used to experience.
The face and eye auto focus feel as good as the Sony but we’ll soon find out.

CP+ 2018

The CP+ in Japan just started, and here are the inital tidbits:

The buzz surrounding the Fujifilm X-H1 launch seems never to end, and while this night was the first night after 10 days, that I could sleep at least 6 hours, my X-H1 coverage continues without a pause.

Using Face Detection

Using Face Detection

by Rico Pfirstinger

Fujifilm kindly delivered the LMO and PDAF upgrades for most of the X-Mount lenses a day earlier than expected, and they have also fixed the manual focus glitch in firmware 2.00 for the classic X100. I am looking forward to read about your first impressions with the X-E2 (and XQ1) using the new hybrid tracking autofocus.

If you need assistance upgrading your camera or lens firmware, you might find this article helpful. Sadly, there’s still no word if or when Zeiss will issue similar firmware updates for their X-Mount Touit lenses.

In Your Face!

Face Detection has always been available in most of Fujifilm’s “consumer” cameras. Among others, you can find this feature in the X10, X-S1, X20, XF1 and XQ1, and now also in the X-A1, X-M1 and X-E2. Face Detection is also available in combination with the tracking autofocus feature of the XQ1 and X-E2. This means that you can use Face Detection along with AF-C (in either single shot or low-speed burst mode) to keep the face of a person in focus while this person is moving left or right, or towards or away the camera.

While the hybrid PDAF/CDAF (combining on-sensor Phase Detection Auto Focus with on-sensor Contrast Detection Auto Focus) allows the camera to focus faster on a subject, Face Detection has to rely mostly (if not entirely) on the camera’s CDAF, because in many real-life situations, the face the camera is locking on will not be fully located inside of the nine central AF frames (the area that is equipped with PDAF pixels).

PDAF helps the camera establish and lock focus faster, but it’s not mandatory to enable autofocus tracking. Just think of the Olympus OM-D EM-5, which doesn’t have PDAF, but still offers fast AF and subject tracking capabilities. Your X-E2 and XQ1 can do this, too: Both cameras can track subjects with any of their 49 AF frames, not just the nine central ones (aka those with PDAF pixels).

In addition to selecting one of the camera’s 49 AF frames, you can also set the X-E2 and XQ1 to track subjects using Face Detection. Click here to access a private Flickr set that illustrates both standard AF tracking (pre-production 23mm lens) and Face Detection AF tracking (pre-production 50-230mm lens) with a pre-production X-E2.

Wait, There’s More!

While most users will immediately understand how Face Detection and the camera’s autofocus work hand-in-hand, some may not realize that Face Detection also influences the exposure metering of the camera. To illustrate this, let’s have a look at an example.

Fujifilm X-A7: Face and Eye Detection Quick Test (Coming to X-T3 and X-T30)

Fujifilm X-A7

As we reported here, the face/eye detection of the Fujiiflm X-A7 is supposed to be even better than the one currently available on the Fujifilm X-T3 and Fujifilm X-T30. But don’t worry, Fujifilm will deliver a firmware update to bring them on par with X-A7.

Now Jessops tested the face and eye detection of the Fujifilm X-A7 in quite low light. They say it locked very well even from pretty far away. You can see it by clicking “play” on the video above.

Compared to “other manufacturers” (Sony), they say it performs very similar in terms of locking on and staying locked.

Other than that, they say:

  • big and super bright screen. Similar to mobile phone. Really responsive. One of the most responsive they have ever seen on a camera
  • you have the original menu, but also a smart menu, that brings up your most used features and you can see adjustments on the screen while you make them (including changing film simulation)
  • aimed for people, who want to step up from a smartphone

Btw… did you know the Fujifilm X-A7 comes also in blue? I have found it for you. To see all 5 colors together, check out our facebook post here, or twitter post here.

Don’t forget to:
