Can Social Media Continue To Grow Like It Has?

Happy New Year everyone!  I had a very restful holiday where I basically unplugged from everything.  I feel refreshed and ready to go. (also the voices in my head are a lot more quiet. lol)

2011 is like a blank canvas waiting to be filled. What are you going to fill it with?

Anyhoo, here is an interesting blog post where the author is speculating that there may be a backlash against social media this year. In a way it makes sense.  For each new technology there is the hype curve, where people all jump into it, but then after a while there is a reevaluation.  Then it drops off and becomes more useful.  Personally I can see where he is coming from.  When I have Facebook, Twitter and RSS going all at once, it can be overwhelming at times.

Just remember, moderation in all things.

  • How we might be more selective in social media

    • In 20th century parlance, there are enough terms, applications and platforms out there to choke a horse.
    • That’s why 2011 could very well be the year of simplicity for social media. Perhaps it will be the year people turn off the noise.
    • Online marketing observer Mark W. Schaefer of Knoxville-based Schaefer Marketing Solutions touches on a potential backlash to all the noise:
    • “Some time next summer as the 2012 budget planning process commences, many marketing executives are going to look over their budgets and figure out they’re not getting any traction from their social media efforts. I think there is going to be a re-set button hit because companies leaped in simply because they were afraid of being left behind; they assigned ineffective resources to the task, and the hyped expectations cannot possibly align with reality.”
    • “Overall the momentum for social media marketing will continue because the best companies get it, are seeing results, and new apps and mash-ups will drive a new round of creativity and investments.”
